About Planet Gongs

Each PAISTE Planet Gong is precisely tuned to a planetary tone of the Cosmic Octave. The interplay of physical frequency calculation and perfect craftsmanship makes each gong a high-quality musical instrument with a distinctive character.

Manufacturing requires experience, precision and care – and this is exactly how Planet Gongs should be treated and cared for.

Learn everything you need to know about the anatomy, striking surfaces, suspension, cleaning, transport and safe handling of your Planet Gong.

Anatomy and striking area

Suspension

The Planet Gongs are supplied with a sturdy gut string for suspension. Gut strings are ideal as they minimise the transmission of vibrations to the gong stand. The string should be checked regularly for wear and replaced if necessary. The gong must be suspended so that it can swing freely in all directions without touching the stand. Replacement strings are available on request.

Cleaning

Gongs should be cleaned regularly. Deposits that accumulate during playing, setting up or transport act as a damper and impair the natural vibration.

Each gong is coated with a layer of wax at the factory to protect it from oxidation and dirt deposits. This is gradually worn away during cleaning and must be renewed from time to time.

Do not use granular, acidic or ammonia-based cleaning agents for cleaning. Always work with light pressure and in the direction of the surface coating. Use only soft, colourless cloths and apply the cleaning agent to the cloth, not directly to the gong. Then remove all residues with two or three fresh cloths and apply a new layer of wax. A liquid, clear wood care wax is best suited for this.

Storage and transport

Principle: Pressure or impact from stepping on, pressing in or incorrect storage can deform the gong and permanently impair its sound.

Storage: Gongs should not be placed on their edges. They could fall over and the rim could become deformed. Gongs should be laid flat with the striking surface facing downwards. Several gongs can be stacked inside each other if you place a protective layer (blanket, foam rubber, felt) between each gong to prevent damage to the surface.

Transport: The safest way to transport gongs is in their original packaging or in other sturdy cardboard boxes or wooden crates with foam rubber or blanket padding. The gongs must not move during transport.

Handling

Avoid metal contact with the gong. No jewellery, zips or belts should come into contact with the gong. If you use a mallet that can leave marks on the gong, consider playing the back of the gong — the sound is the same. Avoid fingerprints. If you do leave marks, don't worry, just remove them as soon as possible with a soft, clean cloth.
